Canisteo is located in the Canisteo River valley southwest of Hornell, NY on Rt.36. Canisteo is one of the oldest towns in Steuben County, formed in March 1796. Canisteo is famous for its historical Indian lore. The site of the World Famous "Living Sign" was once noted in Ripley's "Believe it or Not".
The Canisteo River meanders through 46 miles of the peaceful valleys of Steuben County in South Western NY. Normally a placid and peacefull little river, the melting of heavy winter snows have in the past changed the river to a raging torrent.
