As a crew member during the "Cuban Missile Crisis Blockade" I feel that the ship is entitled to and should be awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the National Defense Medal. I don't know if the U.S. Navy or the Federal Government feels that way (most likely they don't - seems to me Vets are still seen as "cannon-fodder" and old ships only scrap-metal), but I'm going to award them anyway !

Updated 11/9/99. Today I received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Cuba) and the National Defense Medal (Vietnam Era) from the Bureau of Navy Personnel for service aboard Canisteo. I guess that makes it "Official" (37 years late but better than never)
